Mountain Plum Pine 'Blue Gem'
Podocarpus lawrencei 'Blue Gem'
These conifer-like shrubs, Podocarpus lawrencei ‘Blue Gem’ from Tasmania, are both hardy and exotic. They have thick, blunt foliage like that of a conifer, but instead of cones, they produce lush, red “mountain plums.” Arching branches create a rounded, spreading form, and spring growth emerges purple-red, then matures to green, a color that holds through winter.
Adaptable, easy plants - excellent candidates for drier garden sites. Drought tolerant once established.
Slow growing, adding only 3-6" of growth per year.
🪴These plants are excellent for bonsai.
Hardy to zone 6 (-10F).
Plant Nerd:
These incredible plants can live over 600 years!
The "mountain plums" are not edible for humans or mammals, but are enjoyed by some birds and marsupials.
