Willow Oak
Quercus phellos
Well-formed, nicely balanced WNC Native shade tree. Glossy dark green leaves resemble willow foliage. In the wild, these are often found around streams - they can handle medium to wet soils. Long-lived, low maintenance, and of very high value to our local wildlife for food and habitat.
The nuts are edible, but the bitter tannins will need to be removed to make them tasty.
Willow Oak trees are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
