Love Vine, Virgin's Bower, Woodbine

Clematis virginiana

These fall-blooming beauties have little star-shaped white flowers, that turn into puffy ethereal plumes in fall. WNC native species, and native to much of eastern North America.

These vines, while lovely and easy to grow, may be aggressive, and are best in woodland, native, pollinator or shade gardens, where they have room to twine up supports or fences.

While they can tolerate partial shade, they will bloom the best in full sun.

Pollinators: Larval host of the Clematis clearwing moth, which are incredibly dependent on this plant for their continued survival. These plants also attract many pollinators when blooming.

Clematis virginiana is juglone tolerant - it can be planted near Black Walnut trees. These plants also shrug off any damage from deer or rabbits with ease.

While these plants have a history of herbal/medicinal usage, they are NOT edible. These plants have a strong "immune system" and contain Protoanemonin.

Clematis virginiana is easy to mistake for Clematis terniflora, an invasive species from Asia. Clematis virginiana has notches in the foliage, whereas the C. ternifora has foliage with no notches.
