Turkish Fir
Abies bornmuelleriana syn. Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani
New! These delightful evergreen conifers are ideal Christmas trees in the landscape, with a conical form filled with fragrant, dense, dark green glossy needles backed with silver. The long fat cones ripen to reddish brown.
Resembling our native alpine Fraser Firs, these Turkish Firs are better suited to our mid-level elevation and warmer climate. Turkish Firs are known for being the most heat-tolerant of Firs, vigorous and adaptable.

Native to the mountains of northwest Turkey, these trees have an interesting history. One of the mountain ranges they are from is now called “Uludağ" (Great Mountain) but was once called by the ancient Greeks Mount Olympus - the home of Zeus. Additionally, It is rumored that these trees were used to build the famous Trojan Horse, hence “equi-trojani” as the subspecies name.
During the Middle Ages, these remote and hard to access mountains were home to monasteries and hermitages. In the modern era, they host a large National Forest which is a popular site for hiking and camping. In winter, the ski slopes open. Sounds pretty familiar!
Turkish Firs are also known as Bithnyian Fir and Black Sea Fir.
