WNC Native - Slender, resilient deciduous trees in the Birch family. Small to medium-sized, understory trees with a generally rounded crown. Yellow fall color.

The fruiting clusters resemble hops. The tiny seeds are edible. Wildlife enjoy snacking on this tree, especially Ruffed Grouse - a chunky native bird with the hilarious nickname of Thunder Chicken. Ostrya trees can handle what wildlife have to dish out.

The bark has an interesting shaggy texture; the wood is extremely dense and sometimes used for fence posts and tool handles.

Zones 3-9.
