💚Plant Nerd: Hybridized by Dr. August E. Kehr, a master of magnolias and a scientist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1978, he moved to nearby Hendersonville, NC to continue his plant-breeding efforts. One of his biggest contributions to plant breeding was figuring out how to store pollen, this allowed him to cross plants that would not normally bloom at the same time. Daybreak Magnolia is a complex plant, a cross between the Woodsman Magnolia (M. accuminata ‘Klassen’ x M. liliiflora ‘O’Neill’) with pollen from M. ‘Tina Durio’ (M. soulangiana ‘Lennei Alba’ x M. veitchii) that Kehr hand-pollinated into existence and horticultural fame.
