Peach - Contender
Prunus 'Summercrest' x 'Redhaven'
Tasty and productive! An exceptionally hardy, medium to large peach. Lovely pink blooms in spring are attractive to bees. Red skinned fruit with yellow flesh is flavorful, sweet, aromatic, and delicious. Great for canning, cooking, freezing - assuming you don’t eat them all fresh from the tree! Cold hardy and disease resistant.
Self-pollinating, but best yields when planted near another peach variety.
Freestone.
1050 chill hours, which means they will bloom later than most peach trees, perfect for here in the NC mountains!
🛡️Natural Disease Resistance: Resistant to flesh browning, medium resistance to bacterial spot and plum pox virus.
🌞Sunlight - best peach production in full sunlight (6-8 hours of direct sunlight).
Zones 4-8, cold hardy down to -30F.
💚Plant Nerd: Bred in Raleigh, NC, as part of the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station's Peach Breeding Project. They are ideal for planting here in NC and other states where winter temperatures can wildly fluctuate.
Site these plants where they will have excellent soil drainage and air flow all around. Avoid frost pockets, down in the bottom of a holler or valley, if possible.
