History: 1890s-1910s heirloom, West Virginia. Tom Burford mentions "It appeared around 1912 on the farm of Anderson Mullins in Clay County, West Virginia. It is speculated to be a seedling of a Grimes Golden tree; the pollination parent is unverified but Golden Reinette trees were growing nearby. In 1914 Mullins sold the tree for five thousand dollars [~$160,000 in early 2026] to Stark Bro's Nursery. A steel cage was erected around the tree to prevent theft of scionwood for propagation, but scionwood had already been cut." This is actually why you can find the same tree under different names. Golden Delicious was the name of the tree under the Stark Bros patent, Yellow Delicious is from growers who managed to get their hands on the scionwood.
