Scarlet Oak
Quercus coccinea

Brilliant, show-stopping fall color on this magnificent WNC Native shade tree. Rounded, open habit. Low maintenance, long-lived, and of very high value to our local wildlife for food and habitat. Can be grown near Black Walnut. Relatively fast growing for an Oak.

Scarlet Oaks can handle fairly dry conditions, and prefer acidic soils.

Scarlet Oaks have edible nuts, but likely will require processing to remove tannins. When roasted, the nuts can be used as a coffee substitute. They can also be ground up and used as a flour, or to thicken soups.

Scarlet Oak trees are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
