Purple Leaf Plum - Krauter Vesuvius

Prunus cerasifera ‘Krauter Vesuvius’

Beautiful showy, fragrant, light pink flowers in spring. Dramatic dark purple-black summer foliage. A phenomenal ornamental specimen for landscapes that seldom produces fruit. Deciduous. Species is native to Western Asia.

'Krauter Vesuvius' was discovered by Harold Krauter in Bakersfield California, in 1957. It was a "sport" or unusual branch found on a 'Vesuvius' Plum tree he had, and the foliage held onto the dramatic foliage color all through summer. That branch was turned into a tree, and has been valued by purple-black tree lovers ever since.

Zones 4-9.
