Rhododendron 'Chionoides'

Rhododendron ponticum x R. unknown*

A classic favorite in the garden! Large, rounded trusses, each holding clear white bell-shaped flowers with yellow dorsal blotches. Dark green foliage; compact, dense form. Outstanding as a hedge or foundation plant. Evergreen. Needs acidic and moist, well-draining soil.

Prefers morning sun, afternoon shade, and moist, well-draining soil.

*There is some confusion regarding 'Chionoides' Rhododendron. Some sources, such as the American Rhododendron Society and others, cite the Rhododendron ponticum heritage. Dirr and other experts describe it as a hybrid of our native R. catawbiense. 'Chionoides' Rhododendron was hybridized in 1867 in Surrey England by J. Standish.

Zones 4-8.
