Venus Fly Trap
Dionaea muscipula
Unique carnivorous plants, native to eastern NC wetlands. Slow growers - good for small spaces. Rain water or purified water is best. Excellent in a kitchen windowsill where they can earn their keep.
Endangered species - we only sell ethically cultivated plants.
Zones 7-10. Usually 5”T x W.
Plant nerd: There are small hairs on the interior of the traps. When 2 hairs are triggered within a short time frame, a trap will close. As prey moves around, they stimulate additional hairs, which cause the trap to fully seal. Digestive enzymes specific to insects are released inside the trap, and within about 10 days the plant has "digested" all the prey nutrients it can. Wild!!
Venus Fly Trap relatives tend to use sticky traps, but they are limited to digesting much smaller prey. By having larger traps with hair triggers that close, Venus Fly Traps are able to digest much larger prey (such as ants and spiders) and extract their nutrients better than their relatives.
