Soft Stemmed Bulrush, Great Bulrush
Scirpus tabernaemontani syn. Scirpus validus, Scirpus lacustris subsp. tabernaemontani
Attractive narrow, round, foliage and upright habit. Species in the Sedge family. Evergreen perennial. Excellent in marshes, streams, ditches and ponds, and can be planted near Black Walnut trees (has natural resistance to Juglone).
Can grow in water up to 3’ deep over the crown.
Soft Stemmed Bulrush prefers cooler weather, and puts on the most growth during spring and fall.
Small brown fruits attract birds and foliage is a great nesting material for them. Muskrats and other small mammals also enjoy dining on the stems and roots.
Additionally, these plants have a long history of being useful to humans. Some Native American tribes used seeds and young shoots for culinary purposes, and the leaves were used to weave bags, baskets, and mats. The older roots can be used for flour.
Soft Stemmed Bulrush is a great choice for stabilizing shorelines.
Species is native to WNC and most of the US.
