Black Gum - Afterburner®

Nyssa sylvatica ‘David Odom’

Glorious WNC Native variety! Bold red new foliage that matures to glossy dark green, then a fiery scarlet in fall. Strong central leader, with a distinctive and refined pyramidal form. Needs moist, organic, acidic soils. Female. Small flowers are an excellent nectar source for bees; fruits feed birds. Can be planted near Black Walnut. Great shade tree. Tolerates wet soils.

Black Gum trees, also known as Tupelo trees, are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
