Lemon Grass
Cymbopogon citratus
These tender perennials have extensive culinary, herbal, and household uses. From the tropics of southeast Asia, this handsome, easy to grow plant can be used in Thai & Vietnamese cooking, to deter bugs, added to baths, to make soothing teas, & more.
Just before first frost in fall, stalks can be harvested (cut off top leaves and save 6-" sections of the bulbous shoot bases). Freeze for culinary use.
Can be grown in containers, and overwintered indoors in bright light. Lemon Grass plants can live for many years that way.
Interestingly, Lemon Grass oil can attract bees. Beekeepers sometimes use the oil in swarm traps to attract honeybee swarms.
Full sun. Moist, well-draining soil.
Zones 9-11.
