Wild Petunia, Prairie Petunia
Ruellia humilis
Perennial pollinator-attracting herbaceous native to the midwest and eastern US - it is native to WNC, albeit very rare. Perfect for a rocky pond edge. Produces lavender purple flowers from summer to fall. Low maintenance.
Despite the common name, these are not related to Petunias, and are in the Acanthaceae family.
The lavender blooms attract many kinds of pollinators. Host plant for the common buckeye butterfly.
Durable, these plants are an excellent choice for rain gardens.
