RARE. Legendary 1840s heirloom from New York. Superb for cider and desserts - fantastic for all apple uses except for drying. Yellowish flesh is fine grained, rather firm, very tender, crisp, and juicy. The intensely tart, aromatic, and acidic flavor is balanced with potent sweetness. Winter apples that can keep up to 7 months in proper cold storage. Large apples, though trees are slow to bear.
This old heirloom is particular about where it is grown, we are fortunate that here in the mountains of Western North Carolina it grows wonderful apples.
Late season bloomer. Pollinator required. Produces mid-late season.
Disease resistances: immune to woolly apple aphid, slightly resistant to fireblight.
1840s heirloom from East Bloomfield, New York. Reportedly the seeds were brought from Connecticut. The same seedling orchard is where Early Joe and Melon apples came from. Northern Spy is also known as Adair Red, King Apple, Northern Spice, Spy, and Red Spy. Reportedly the name comes from a notorious novel published around 1830, popular with anti-abolitionists.
