Many parts of this plant are Edible & Medicinal, including the seeds, leaves, fruits, & roots. The calyx - the fleshy, nutritious, tart, bright red cup-like structure that contains the plant's seeds - is popular in herbal teas, punches, jams, cordials, & as a substitute for cranberry. Protein-filled seeds can be brewed like coffee or added to salads. 

Native to Central & West Africa. 

Full sun. Moist, well-draining soil. Heat and humidity tolerant.

Other names include: Florida Cranberry, Indian Sorrel, Jamaican Tea, Maple-Leaf Hibiscus, October Hibiscus, Red Sorrell, and Sudanese Tea.

Zone 8, tender perennial. Annual when grown outdoors, or keep in containers and treat as sun-loving house plants.
