Fantastic WNC Native with bright red new foliage in spring, turning rich dark green before a brilliant fall finale with yellow-orange, and vibrant scarlet. Excellent Leaf-spot resistance. Small ornamental black fruit is loved by birds. Can be planted near Black Walnut. Deciduous.
Black Gum trees, also known as Tupelo trees, are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
Discovered in a nursery in Oregon, 1990.
