Majestic WNC Native shade tree with lush fall color. One of the best trees for our native birds and other wildlife. Can be grown near Black Walnut. Low maintenance and can live 300+ years!
Red Oak trees are also known as Northern Red Oak and Champion Oak.
Interestingly, Red Oak trees have developed the ability to handle heat waves over 100F, and brief periods of flooding. They are very resilient trees.
Red Oak nuts are edible but contain a significant amount of tannins and will require leaching. Wildlife enjoy them despite the tannins.
Red Oak trees are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
