Improved Meyer Lemon
Citrus × meyeri ‘Improved’
Grow your own lemons! Delicious fruit, wonderfully fragrant blossoms, and evergreen foliage. Be generous with fertilizer and you'll be rewarded with fruit for many years to come.
Meyer Lemons are thought to be a cross between lemons and oranges. It was first brought to the USA by USDA plant explorer Frank Meyer in 1908, from Beijing China.
Meyer Lemons have a remarkable ability to bloom multiple times per year, whereas most citrus will only bloom - and therefore produce a crop - only once per year.
The tender and juicy fruits do not handle shipping well, which is why Meyer Lemons are rarely found in in stores, and are mainly grown by adventurous gardeners and citrus enthusiasts
Self-pollinating. Plants can be pruned to whatever size fits your home and garden; container size can impact growth and therefore plant size. Don't be in a rush to up-pot these, move up a pot size at a time as they grow. Like other Citrus, Meyer Lemons do best with rich soil that has excellent drainage.
Bring indoors when temperatures drop below 50°F degrees and place by a large bright window, or use supplemental lighting.
