💚Plant Nerd: Pollinated by beetles? Yes! Carolina Allspice are so ancient that they were finding pollinator partners in beetles, as bees hadn't quite evolved yet at the time. Calycanthus are traced back 115 million years ago to a relative named Araripia that was found in modern day Brazil/Brasil where things were hot, steamy, and beetles were willing to be lured to dark colored blooms with a spicy scent. This winning strategy continues to this day! Carolina Allspice plants are related to Magnolias.
