Prunus maritima
US Native - Beautiful and fragrant white spring blooms give way to tiny purple fruits found on the coastal plain from VA to Canada. Tasty fresh; exceptional for making jams, jellies, and wine. Plant at least 2 for pollination. Good for wildlife. Once abundant, development has decreased their populations in the wild.
Interesting information from New Jersey Extension Agent Jenny Carleo: "According to the 2008 unpublished research results of Dr. Amy Howell from Rutgers, beach plums have been found to have very high antioxidant levels as well as the same UTI prevention activity of cranberries."
5-6’T. Zones 3-6.
