White Fringetree
Chionanthus virginicus
WNC NATIVE. Gorgeous! Prized large shrubs or small trees with upright branches forming a dome shape. Soft green leaves back magnificent clusters of fragrant lacy fringe-y creamy white blooms. Spectacular in full bloom! Birds love the blue-black olive-like berries, though you'll need to mulitple trees (male and female) to get them. Yellow fall foliage. Needs moist, well-draining, fertile soil.
Despite being showstopping plants, they are woefully underutilized by gardeners.
Use them as specimens in smaller spaces, or massed in larger ones. White Fringetrees are excellent choices for children's gardens, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, native gardens, pond gardens (on the edge), rain gardens, and more.
?Birds Over 75 species of birds have been spotted eating the fruit; these trees are an important food source for migratory birds. Plant at least 2 trees for fruit.

?Host plants to 13 species of NC moths.
?Fire resistant.
?Can be planted under Black Walnuts.
?️Tolerant of urban conditions.
