'Akebono' translates to Daybreak in English, and is a classic flowering cherry cultivar from 1925. It is currently the most numerous type of flowering cherry planted in the famous Tidal Basin in Washington DC - home of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Yoshino flowering cherry trees are included in the The City of Asheville's Recommended Species List (2022).
