Japanese Maple 'Coral Bark'
Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’

Prized cultivar from 1800s Japan, with incredible color from the bark and foliage creating interest across all 4 seasons! Spring foliage is a bright green with red margins. Matures to light green in summer, and warms up to a soft golden-yellow tinged with scarlet in fall.

The brilliant coral-red bark on the young branches provides fantastic year round interest but is particularly noticeable in winter, when it can appear almost fluorescent. The bark color is less prominent in summer, but come fall color will flush again, especially on newer growth.

Coral bark maples have an upright growth habit and a vase-shaped form. When they are young they grow quite quickly, in time they spend more effort on filling their form with additional branches.

Phenomenal specimen. Be certain to plant these where you'll be able to enjoy them year round.

Under ideal conditions, with moist, well-draining soil, they can live 80+ years.

🏆RHS Award winner.

💚RCN Customer Favorite - we have a hard time keeping these in stock!

Plant Nerd: Sango kaku translates to coral tower (sango = sea coral, kaku - tower/upright growing) as if to suggest this coral-red-barked cultivar resembles coral rising up from a reef.

Synonymous with and formerly sold as ‘Senkaki’.
