Allium cernuum

Charming, elegant, fairy-like flowers on these durable WNC Native plants! Star-like blossoms face the ground, blooming in shades of white, light pink, and pale lavender, with yellow pollen. Bees enjoy gathering pollen and nectar from the tiny flowers, butterflies and even hummingbirds can be attracted to these plants.

When happy, these plants are very long-lived. They are gorgeous when massed together.

These edible plants can be eaten, usually like chives. There is a history of Native American medicinal uses for these plants. But they are usually enjoyed for their ornamental and pollinator uses in the garden. They particularly excel in: Butterfly Gardens, Cottage Gardens, Native Gardens, and of course Pollinator Gardens.

The Xerxes Society has this Allium cernuum listed as being of special value to native bees.

This plant is how Chicago got it's name! The Algonquin Indian name for this plant is "chigagou".

Allium cernuum prefer moist, well-draining soils. While they will bloom best in full sun, they can also live in partial shade. They can also be planted under Black Walnut trees.
