Apple 'Granny Smith'
Malus 'Granny Smith'
A late season favorite that produces heavy annual crops of tart and tasty green apples. Best for fresh eating, pies, cooking, and cider. Great keepers. When left to ripen on the tree, fruits can take on a more pink appearance and the flavor is sweeter and more complex than store-bought apples which are harvested early. Tip-bearer.
~600 Chill hours - plant Granny Smith where she'll stay consistently cool in winter (north facing slopes would be ideal).
Mid-to-late season bloomer. While Granny Smith is technically self-pollinating, the yields will be greatly improved when given a pollinator. Good pollinator for other apples. Late harvest season. Granny Smith has a tendency to overbear, thinning in June will help provide consistent yields from year to year.
Disease resistance: Some resistance to cedar apple rust.
Heirloom from 1868 Australia. Granny Smith was discovered growing as a seedling in New South Wales by 68-year-old Maria Ann Smith.
Zones 5-9. Cold hardy to -20F.
