Native to WNC and much of the Southern Appalachian mountains. Bushy semi-evergreen shrubs with rich green lance-shaped leaves and exfoliating bark on mature plants. The small golden-yellow flowers have numerous long stamens and bloom on arching stems in spring and attract pollinators in droves. Plant massed, in shrub borders, foundations or as a low flowering hedge. In the wild, they are found near streams, ponds, lake banks, seepage slopes, and wet meadows.
They are drought and erosion resistant once established.
