Pontederia cordata
Native to WNC and eastern North America, where it thrives at bog, pond, and river edges. Lovely and easy to grow, with attractive foliage and gorgeous 3-6” spring blooms. Seeds and young leafstalks are edible.
Provides wildlife habitat - damselflies and dragonflies lay eggs on the stems; underwater the plant provides shelter for fish. Perennial. Grows in water up to 12” deep.
Resists deer; tolerant of high temperatures.
