Japanese Holly - Sky Pencil
Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’
Marvelous vertical interest with fine texture. Columnar, densely branched evergreen shrubs. Lustrous dark green leaves. Female. Outstanding massed, as topiary, hedge, or foundation planting, and in containers.
Sky pencil hollies are female. You can plant a male Ilex crenata nearby for berries, but the small black berries are rather hidden in the foliage.
Sky pencil hollies were discovered on Mount Dai-sen in Honshu, Japan. In 1985, they were introduced to the US from a private collection in Japan.
