Hardy Banana Trees
Musa basjoo
Classic tropical foliage plants. Excellent near ponds, patios, porches, or as a specimen tree. These plants can grow 7-15’ tall, with giant 2-6’ leaves all summer long. Hardy Bananas love moisture and mulch. Will die back in winter. Low maintenance.
From the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.
Protect from wind.
The fruits are inedible, however the leaves can be used for cooking - a natural substitute for aluminum foil. There are many cuisines around the world where there is a dish stuffed with raw local / seasonal proteins & vegetables, doused with sauce / salsa / seasoning pastes, wrapped them in banana leaves, & then steamed in its own juices, with vapor, smoke or dry heat. They can even be grilled. Delicious!
Zones 6-10.
