'Golden Dew' Tufted Hair Grass
Deschampsia cespitosa 'Goldtau'
Tufted Hairgrass ‘Goldtau’ is a WNC native cultivar with fine foliage and golden, airy flower panicles that add soft texture and movement to gardens. Flower panicles turn yellowish-tan after bloom as the seed ripens and may remain attractive through much of the winter. The seedheads persist well into winter and become bronze-brown with age – they work well in dried winter flower arrangements.
Excellent massed in woodland gardens or naturalized areas where the ethereal summer bloom produces a delicate cloud of subtle colors hovering above the foliage. Also effective as a specimen or in masses or drifts in shaded areas of borders, rock gardens, or moist areas along ponds or streams to stabilize the streambanks. One of the few ornamental grasses that grows well in some shade.
These sturdy and resilient plants can handle urban conditions, and also be planted near Black Walnut trees.
Very low maintenance - once a year, cut old growth near the ground in late winter to early spring.
✨RARE - within NC, these plants are considered to be "Critically Imperiled" by Natureserve due to their extreme rarity. Growing these plants in your garden will help to prevent their extinction. They are so rare it's unknown if they host any butterfly or moth species here in NC.
🐦Birds are attracted to the seeds.
🦌Deer do not find these to be tasty.
Happiest in sun to partial sun, in moist, rich, well-draining soils. They do not mind clay soils.
