Cardinal Flower
Lobelia cardinalis
Stunning scarlet red flower late summer to fall. WNC native. Use in garden beds, edges of streams and ponds; in water gardens, rain gardens, and more. Short-lived perennial attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Can be planted near Black Walnuts.
1982, 1983, and 2001 NC Wildflower of the Year.
Zones 3-9.
2-4’T x 1-2’W.
Plant Nerd: Reportedly the dried leaves were smoked by the Penobscot people as a tobacco substitute. However, this is not an edible plant and it best for humans, pets, and livestock to avoid eating it.
