Dryopteris marginalis
Gorgeous! These evergreen, perennial ferns are native to WNC, and much of the east coast. Ranging from blue to olive to grayish-green, the deeply cut leathery fronds are a delight year round, but are especially notable in winter. They love moist, rich soils in partial to full shade.
Ideal for: Native Gardens, Shade Gardens, Winter Gardens, and more.
🐦Help birds - songbirds use the fronds to construct nests.
🦌Deer resistant: these ferns aren't at the top of the deer menu.
🌳Juglone resistant: these ferns can be planted near Black Walnut trees.
18-36"T x 24-36"W.
Zones 4a-9b, cold hardy down to -30F.
💚Plant Nerd: The genus name of Dryopteris comes from Greek dryas meaning oak, and pteris meaning fern, in reference to the presence of some species of wood ferns found in oak-filled forests.
