Dawn Redwood
Metasequoia glyptostroboides
100 million years ago, these trees were once widespread across North America and Eurasia. Today, they are a tiny fragment of endangered forest in China. Fortunately, the Arnold Arboretum out of Harvard University paid for some seeds to be collected in the 1950s, and now you can plant some of these very incredibly unique deciduous conifers in your own garden.
These majestic specimens do need plenty of space, and they seriously love water. With an upright pyramidal habit, the lovely bright green needles turn to brown-red in fall before gently falling to the ground.
Plant them in rich, moist areas of the garden - even next to ponds.
⭐Recommended to Plant: Dawn Redwoods are listed on the City of Asheville Recommended Species List (2022).
🌞Sunlight: these plants are best in full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight).
💧Water: Dawn Redwoods need ample water, especially for the first few years in the ground and during any dry spells.
🦌Deer resistant - Dawn Redwoods aren't at the top of the deer menu.
🏙️Tolerant of urban conditions.
🧂Avoid Salt: Protect Dawn Redwoods from salt. Avoid planting them next to roads that may be salted in winter.
100'T x 25'W.
Zones 4-8, cold hardy down to -30F.
💚Plant Nerd: In China, these trees are part of a quickly-disappearing ecosystem, having been logged and replaced for agriculture. The wood appears to be long-lasting, as homes that were constructed from the trees have lasted for several hundred years. Very cool.
