Hearts-a-Bustin / Strawberry Bush / Bursting Heart
Euonymus americanus
Uniquely wonderful WNC Native shrub! Spectacular fall displays of bright orange berries dangling from warty, raspberry pink capsules. Good fall foliage color. Seeds and berries are important food for birds and small mammals; great for supporting and attracting native bees and other pollinators. Loose suckering, great for naturalizing, can be planted under Black Walnuts.
Tolerant of a variety of soils, from sandy to clay; it can handle moist streambanks and is also drought tolerant once established. Low maintenance!
Zones 6-9.
