NATIVE to WNC and much of the East Coast! Beautiful, durable little trees features 5-petaled, showy, slightly fragrant, showy white flowers which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring. The leaves emerge rather gray but turn medium to dark green in summer, their fall color can be absolutely fabulous - a range of yellow, apricot orange to deep dusty red. Their natural tendency is to have multiple stems; they prefer moist, well-draining soils.

Fruits are edible for humans raw or in jams and jellies, although flavor quality can be variable. Host plants for multiple butterflies and moths in NC; birds and other wildlife greatly appreciate the fruit.
