Quince - Aromatnaya
Cydonia oblonga
RARE. Bears abundant crops of very large, bright yellow, aromatic fruit with a delicious, lemony flavor. Can be eaten fresh or used in many dishes and to make particularly tasty & attractive preserves. 10-12’T. Zone 4. Self-fertile.
Once very popular and now hard to find, Quince deserves to be more widely planted in our gardens and landscapes. An attractive, spreading, small tree, Quince is adorned with large, cup-shaped, pink and white flowers in the spring followed by bountiful crops of large, bright yellow, sweetly aromatic fruit in late fall. High in Vitamin C and pectin, Quince makes delicious preserves and baked goods.
The flowers are pollen/nectar rich, and attract pollinators.
Plant Nerd: these are ancient plants with a long culinary history - Quince has been used by humanity since at least 5000 BCE. They are featured in Roman cookbooks, and in Renaissance still life paintings.
