Sedge - Pennsylvania
Carex pensylvanica
WNC Native, semi-evergreen. Charming, narrow, low-growing foliage that forms a lush green carpet. Superb lawn alternative or ground cover. Great pollinator plant, supporting numerous caterpillar species. Provides shelter and nesting material for birds. Found in forest floors and meadows in Eastern North America.
While most Carex (Sedges) prefer rather moist soils, Carex pensylvanica can handle those on the dry side - or moist. Nice!
When happy, these plants will slowly creep and spread. They are very slow to start from seed, so if you want these as a beautiful and low maintenance lawn alternative or other large area project, you'll want to use potted plants.
🐦Birds are attracted to the seeds, such as Cardinals, Chickadees, Finches, and Nuthatches, in addition to providing shelter and nesting materials.
🦋Butterly & Moth Host Plant: These plants are important for at least 9 species NC butterflies, and at least 33 species of NC moths!
🦌Deer do not tend to find them tasty.
Partial to full shade.
4-8”T x 6-12”W.
Zones 4-8, cold hardy down to -30F.
