Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis

Lovely rosy pink to lavender edible spring flowers attract pollinators. Pleasing heart-shaped foliage. Forms a spreading, graceful crown. Beautiful specimen, stunning massed. Brown seedpods are a wildlife food source. WNC Native. Can be planted near Black Walnut.

Tolerant of full sun to partial shade, they are widely adaptable. A lovely specimen for smaller spaces and good in pollinator gardens, and nestled in woodlands at the forest edge. Plant in mass for a dramatic flower show in spring.

The flowers are edible and can be enjoyed in salads or left on the tree for beauty.

According to The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Eastern Redbuds are important for native bees by providing habitat and/or materials for nest construction. They are also larval host plants and the bean pods provide valuable food for birds and other creatures.
